Racking Awareness, Safety & Inspection training course

Stakehill BID funded a Racking Awareness, Safety & Inspection training course and was provided by TEEPEE Inspect for the companies on Stakehill industrial estate.

Why was the course required?

HSE 76 Warehousing & Storage. A guide to health and safety states…

643 As soon as a safety problem or damage is observed by any employee, it should immediately be reported to the PRRS (Person Responsible for Racking Safety). You should have systems in place for reporting damage and defects.

644 Employees should receive training, information, and instruction on the safe operation of the racking system, including the parts affecting their safety and the safety of others.

645 The PRRS should ensure that inspections are made at weekly or other regular intervals based on risk assessment. A formal written record should be maintained.

The course included:

• Racking variants & industry terminology

• Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA)

• Equipment components – performance & design

• Pallet clearances

• Legal responsibilities

• How to conduct an inspection

• SEMA classifications – red, amber, green & exercises

• Rack protection & preventative damage

• Inspection practical

• Written assessment

The training course was unique in that it was designed to encompass all levels of personnel in an easy-to-follow format with interaction at every step and delivered by one of Teepee Inspect SEMA inspectors who has a wealth of knowledge and industry experience. Once the classroom-based modules had been completed the inspection practical took place, which was a simulated inspection on equipment alongside the SEMA approved inspector, giving consistency with each company’s own internal inspections and annual inspection.  It was then time to re-enforce the days learning with multiple choice questions and answers and the successful candidates were then issued with certificates that last for three years.

The BID is dedicated to upskilling employees on Stakehill, and more training will be provided throughout the year. Keep an eye on the weekly E Bulletin for further information.

Details of future courses will be in the weekly e-bulletin and if you don’t yet receive the e-bulletin but would like to click on the Link to register.
